This is not the first time President Muhammadu Buhari will brazenly disregard the ruling of a court and he now appears to make such his greatest legacy.
The kerfuffle surrounding the ruling of the supreme court is needless as it is one that should readily be understood by anyone. The outright disregard of the ruling by the governor of the Central Bank and the Muhammadu Buhari administration shows that it is an intentional act. The reasons for such a looming bad precedent are widely unknown but many have attributed it to the partisanship of the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele.
It is more laughable that an ‘ordinary’ government official who was not elected by the people has now become the major source of the problem. There is no reason to recall the negative effects of this rushed-up, uncritical and unintelligent policy. The initial argument by economic analysts on the importance of the policy has been defeated already. The Emefiele ‘Halleluyah’ boys who championed the policy have all gone mute as they have seen the real intention of the apex bank governor.
President Buhari has hitherto displayed his autocratic tendencies when he gave a pronouncement on the old notes despite the case still being in court. He overruled the Supreme court and has since arrogated all the powers of the land to himself. With the rubber-stamp legislature witnessed throughout his administration and his new decision to arrogate the powers of the Supreme Court to himself, It would not be out of place to liken President Muhammadu Buhari to a tyrant! All his achievements via the electoral reform and signing the electoral act into law have now been thrown away through his brazen contempt of the highest court in the land.
Nigerians should never forget this part of our democratic history Buhari and Emefiele has shaded in black. Disobeying the apex court will have huge consequences on our democratic sojourn. Don’t forget, the evil of the past always bite in the future. Let’s hope this judicial evil being perpetrated by a democratically elected President and a handpicked CBN governor would not bite too hard in the nearerst future!
